Alessandra Guarascio obtained a bachelor’s degree in Restoration (2007) and holds a master’s degree in Contemporary Art Conservation (2010) from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. Her career started then with a thesis on the documentation and rearrangement of a complex video installation by John Bock, titled MienGribbohmWien.
She completed several internships, including one at the Museo del Novecento for the conservation of Alexander Brodsky’s installation Coma and the Hangar Bicocca for the documentation and re-installation of Anselm Kiefer’s The Seven Heavenly Palaces. Then, Alessandra collaborated with Barbara Ferriani’s restoration studio and joined the Triennale team shortly after the creation of the Conservation and Restoration department for the Design Museum. She subsequently contributed to several projects between 2010 and 2013, working on both the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, before moving to Asia, where she has been based since 2012.
After spending six years in Singapore and working in various roles and different institutions, ranging from Senior Conservator and Registrar at the Art Science Museum to Collections Care Manager at the National Gallery, Alessandra moved to Hong Kong in 2018 to take part of the M+ Museum as Installation Art Conservator, a position she currently holds.
Her research focuses primarily on documentation techniques and the practical and theoretical issues related to the variability of installation artworks and their reproducibility, with a particular focus on unconventional materials and collaborations with artists.
Alessandra presented and continues to share her research at various international events, including conferences, lectures, and symposiums across Europe, the United States and Asia. Since 2021, she has the been co-coordinator of INCCA-AP (International Network for the Conservation of Contemporary Art – Asia Pacific) group, and she serves as Communication Chair for CAN!
